Sustainability Education through interactive games

Celebrating WWF Earth Hour with Sustainability Education

On March 25th, 2023, WWF Nepal organized Sustainability Fair to celebrate Earth Hour, where Sustainability Solutions in coordination with the Hult KCM and Wine to Water hosted the Knowledge Hub. The fair had a variety of eco-friendly and sustainable business showcasing their products, while we were busy educating the visitors on sustainability with interactive games. Our games included Sustainability Quiz, Environmental and Social (E&S) photo corner, and Sustainability Explorer.

Since the visitors were expected to be of all age groups and varying levels of expertise, the sustainability quiz was separated for kids and adults. The questions were prepared such that they upgraded the participant’s knowledge on climate change, environment, wildlife conservation, 3Rs, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Environmental and Social (E&S) sustainability. The participants, appreciated the knowledge they gained by playing the quiz more than the gift hampers themselves. The games were delivered using an app to minimize paper usage.

The Environmental and Social corner focused on helping visitors identify and understand E&S risks and impacts of business or development activities. The corner had a photo booth that showcased photographs of good and bad practices and information about environmental and social sustainability. The objective of this interactive corner was to help participants understand the fundamental for businesses to manage environmental and social risks and also help build critical lens to identify greenwashing. The participants were intrigued that even eco-friendly, clean energy, or social enterprises could have adverse negative impacts on the environment and society.

The Sustainability Explorer game was designed to have participants visit the businesses in the fair and have them understand sustainable practices by answering various questions and clues. This allowed for the participants to explore various sustainable business practices while learning about it and also for the businesses to build partnerships with each other.

We were supported by eleven volunteers and were able to engage over 500 participants in the various learning activities. WWF Nepal provided amazing merchandise for gifting to the game winners. We were amazed with the knowledge of children on sustainability and also their desire to participate in the quiz. These experiences motivates us to build on our work and collaboration to continue educating and building the next generation of sustainable leaders.
