ESG Training for Fund Manager in Nepal

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles are increasingly recognized as a vital framework for sustainable investment enabling private sector growth while addressing pressing environmental challenges, social inequalities, and ethical governance. However, in Nepal, ESG integration in fund management remains limited due to the absence of a legislative framework, practical guidelines, and institutional capacity.

To bridge this gap, a two-day training workshop titled “Investing Responsibly: Embedding ESG in Fund Management” was held on April 17–18, 2025, at Hotel Himalaya, Lalitpur. Organized by the Nepal Private Equity Association (NPEA) and Invest for Impact Nepal (IIN), the training was designed and delivered by Sustainability Solutions, a leading ESG and sustainability advisory firm in Nepal.

The workshop brought together 25 participants representing 15 fund managers, a law firm, and the Securities Exchange Board of Nepal, with 48% female participation. Facilitated by Sandeep Shrestha, Keyur Pradhan, and Yusha Pradhan from Sustainability Solutions, the training provided practical tools and strategies to effectively embed ESG principles throughout the investment lifecycle.

The comprehensive course covered nine modules including ESG Fundamentals, International ESG Standards, Integrated ESG in Investment Processes, E&S Risk Assessments, E&S Management Systems (ESMS), Reporting and Disclosure, Roles and Responsibilities, and ESG Governance. Through case studies, simulations, and interactive discussions, participants developed a strong understanding of ESG frameworks such as IFC Performance Standards, UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and IFRS Sustainability Disclosures.

This workshop marks a critical step in strengthening ESG capacity within Nepal’s financial ecosystem, enabling fund managers to make informed, responsible investment decisions. It not only built technical knowledge but also fostered collaboration, peer learning, and a roadmap for institutionalizing ESG practices tailored to Nepal’s unique socio-economic and environmental context.
